About
Hume City Council awarded a contract to JustWaste Consulting for the provision of an annual audit of kerbside recyclables.
The audit supports monitoring and evaluation of the council's domestic fortnightly recycling collection service, which uses 140L, 240L and 360L mobile recycling bins.
Commingled recyclables are transported by the collection contractor to a recycling material sorting and recovery facility at Coolaroo operated by SKM Recycling.
Over a fortnight, 66,500 bins are collected by five collection vehicles from Monday to Friday, with approximately two loads per day per vehicle, each load weighing on average seven tonnes.
No weekend collection service is provided.
The audit also assists in managing contractual obligations with the collection and sorting contractors.
This contract reflects a growing trend for local governments to engage specialist consultancies for independent verification of recycling performance and contractor compliance, particularly given the operational complexity of multi-bin systems and reliance on third-party sorting facilities.
