Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources awarded a contract to Sabre Marine & General Engineers Pty Ltd trading as Bruny Island Ferry Company for the charter from the Crown of the MV Mirambeena to deliver a vehicle and passenger ferry service between Kettering and Bruny Island for the period 1 July 2008 through 30 June 2018.
The award followed expressions of interest for a possible invitation to tender and established a ten-year charter arrangement for operation of the Kettering–Bruny Island ferry route using the MV Mirambeena.
The ten-year charter to a specialist maritime operator indicated a government preference for long-term arrangements that provide continuity of essential regional transport services, favouring suppliers able to supply both a vessel and operational capability.
