About
Department of Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts awarded a contract to Austral Archaeology Pty Ltd for archaeological site investigation services related to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) redevelopment.
In response to September 2007 test-pit excavations conducted for TMAG that recommended additional investigations, the consultant was engaged to supply further data to guide the masterplan and future concept planning and design stages.
The scope required the consultant to locate potential underground storage vaults in the TMAG Courtyard adjacent to the Bond Store and to determine their depth, extent, nature and condition.
The consultant was responsible for project management and site investigation including a locator service for underground lines, excavation of two test pits, ground reinstatement, traffic management, and provision of a qualified European heritage consultant and an Aboriginal heritage officer.
The consultant also supervised and directed all excavation and archaeological work, documented processes and findings, recovered significant artefacts and carried out their cleaning, analysis, curation and documentation, and delivered a full report.
Contracts for heritage‑site investigations were awarded to specialist archaeological consultancies capable of on-site excavation, artefact analysis and both European and Aboriginal heritage representation to provide essential data for masterplanning and design decisions.
