About
North East Water awarded a contract to SMEC Australia Pty Ltd for the provision of dam safety consultancy services for the 2025–2030 period to develop and conduct a dam safety monitoring and inspection program and to ensure North East Water’s Dam Inspection and Monitoring Program complied with ANCOLD guidelines.
The contract covered provision of dam engineering specialist services to continue dam safety monitoring and reporting across North East Water’s portfolio — seven High-consequence and seven Significant-consequence dams, plus 212 Low and Very Low consequence category dams — complementing weekly visual inspections undertaken by North East Water operational staff and supporting intermediate and comprehensive inspections.
The role under the contract also included duties identified in the Dam Safety Emergency Plan to support management of potential hazards and dam safety incidents for major dams.
The contract noted that SMEC had been commissioned in 2024 to complete a portfolio risk assessment for North East Water, that the results of that assessment were to be made available to the successful tenderer, and that SMEC may be approached to deliver some of the assessment recommendations outside the lump-sum contract.
Awarding the contract to SMEC, which completed the 2024 portfolio risk assessment, provided continuity between the assessment and the delivery of monitoring, inspection and emergency-support services; such continuity supports efficient implementation of ANCOLD-aligned dam safety programs across a mixed-consequence dam portfolio.
