Ararat Rural City Council awarded a contract to DBD Environmental Pty Ltd for environmental monitoring and planning scheme amendment services related to eleven closed, unlicensed small landfills.
The project follows a 2019 Closed Landfill Assessment Report by the Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group (GCWWRRG) on behalf of 12 councils in the Grampians region.
The landfills were assessed using EPA Publication 1671 – Local Council Self-Assessment Tool for Closed Landfill Environmental Risk and qualitatively by GCWWRRG staff.
The contract aims to conduct environmental management upgrade works to meet EPA's Best Practice Environmental Management (BEPM) guidelines and alleviate environmental and OH&S risks to the community and future land use.
This contract reflects a growing trend for local councils to engage specialized environmental firms to manage legacy landfill risks, ensuring regulatory compliance and community safety.
