About
Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions awarded a contract to Intract (Intract Australia Pty Ltd) for the removal of flood-damaged infrastructure at Danggu (Geikie Gorge) National Park.
The contract addressed damage sustained during the January 2023 flood event to infrastructure including buildings, the bitumen car park, and a concrete walkway, and the collapse of sections of the walkway and the concrete-and-steel jetty abutment into the Fitzroy River (Martuwarra).
With river levels having receded to approximately 2.5 metres and submerged concrete and steel becoming visible, the contract covered extraction of damaged concrete and steel from the riverbed to remove safety hazards to recreational boaters and swimmers and to enable the return to operation of the tourist vessel Ms Casey Ross.
The scope included reduction or cutting of materials where necessary to facilitate safe removal, establishment of river access via a contoured entry point on the riverbank, and re-contouring of any terrestrial areas disturbed during the operation to restore the site to its original condition.
The contract combined underwater debris removal, onshore access works and site rehabilitation, indicating a multi-discipline remediation scope focused on hazard removal and restoring visitor access.
