About
Public Transport Authority awarded a contract to Telemattica (TELEMATTICA CORPORATION PTY LTD) for the design and supply of a pantograph collision detection system and associated ICT management.
The work addressed detection of pantograph wear, chipping and foreign-object interaction with Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) across the PTA’s electrified network, which comprised 362 km of track and OLE and 126 pantographs on 48 two-car A Series and 78 three-car B Series trains.
The contract responded to operational pressures including a planned increase from a maximum of 12 trains per hour to 18 tph between 2022 and 2031 and network expansion under METRONET, and to past events including three reported occurrences of pantograph contact damage in 2021 and a major entanglement incident on 17 March 2020 on the Joondalup line.
The solution replaced largely manual inspection processes that relied on low-resolution footage from pantograph cameras on Rail Car 04 and Rail Car 91 and extensive track walking, with a purpose-designed detection and ICT management capability intended to improve identification and location of defects.
The contract targeted a combination of onboard sensing and back-end ICT to reduce manual video review and inspection time; suppliers with integrated sensor-to-IT system capabilities were therefore suited to deliver against these operational risk and network-capacity drivers.
