Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration awarded a contract to Thuroona Services Pty Ltd for a site investigation at the Yampire Gorge Abandoned Mine Site located approximately 37 kilometres north‑west of Auski Roadhouse along Nanutarra–Munjina Road.
The works involved assessment of multiple abandoned mining features, including underground mine shafts, redundant infrastructure and uncontained tailings from historical mining activities, and addressed community concerns about potential downstream movement of tailings within the Fortescue Catchment and safety risks due to proximity to active prospecting areas.
The contract scope, as set out in RFQ LGIRS26164 and its attachments (Scope of Works, Price Schedule, GIS data and WH&S Project Review Tools), recognised significant logistical challenges posed by the site’s remote location, including absence of accommodation, water, power and sanitation, limited services and unreliable mobile phone coverage (including Telstra), and required site access and entry to be arranged in advance through DMPE.
The procurement emphasised technical, environmental and WH&S capability and the ability to manage remote-site logistics, indicating such capabilities are decisive factors in awards for abandoned-mine investigations.
