Research investment sought to develop the knowledge, genetic resources and breeding-enabling tools required to improve seed coat colour stability and seed size uniformity in Australian faba beans over a four-year period. The project will investigate genetic, physiological, biochemical and environmental drivers of visual grain quality, including mechanisms of seed coat oxidation and post-harvest darkening, and will consider non-genetic contributors such as storage conditions, handling practices and environmental effects. It will develop and validate modern phenotyping and analytical tools — including artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital imaging and high-throughput phenotyping — to objectively measure seed coat colour stability, seed size uniformity and other visual attributes. The investment will identify and incorporate valuable genetic variation to deliver breeder-ready germplasm with measurable improvements supported by genetic, phenotypic and validated molecular marker datasets, and requires strong, ongoing collaboration with Australian commercial and public faba bean breeding programs to guide trait prioritisation, validation and deployment. The intended outcome is breeder-ready germplasm, molecular markers, phenotyping tools and knowledge to accelerate development of faba bean varieties with improved visual grain quality, greater market suitability and reduced risk of classification downgrades, helping to maintain market premiums, improve storage and marketing flexibility and protect Australia’s reputation for high-quality faba beans.
