About

Primary Industries and Regions South Australia awarded a contract to Kauppila Pty Ltd for site works to install a custom-built mobile sterile insect production facility for X-ray irradiated sterile sheep blowfly (Lucilia cuprina) on Kangaroo Island.

The contract covered preparation and extension of the existing hardstand at 217 North Coast Road, Kingscote, and provision of groundwork and installation interfaces to receive prefabricated modular units (including modified shipping containers) that comprised the mobile facility.

The mobile facility was to be used to produce X-ray irradiated sterile Lucilia cuprina that were to be released during operations between 2022 and 2026 to support eradication of the fly and associated sheep fly-strike from Kangaroo Island.

The site, accessed from Ten Trees Lagoon Road off North Coast Road, had previously been used for grain storage.
