Public Transport Authority awarded a contract to Jacobs Group (Australia) Pty Ltd for a Level 2 engineering inspection, paint/coating assessment, walkway design review and cost estimation services for the Stokely Over Canning Rail Bridge on the Armadale Line at 18.057 km chainage.
The scope included review, validation and certification of the walkway design and documentation including load-rating assessment results; conduct of a Level 2 inspection to record defects; a steel protection coating investigation to identify a painting maintenance strategy; a cost estimate for bridge remediation work including required work methodology; and a cost estimate for walkway supply and installation works.
The bridge, constructed in 1987, comprised five simply supported spans with four main steel I-girders totalling 91.5 m length and an overall width of 8.8 m.
No edge protection was provided on the existing bridge; five refuges on each of the Down Main and Up Main sides were planned to be replaced by walkways.
The superstructure had previously been load-rated at a minimum of 110% of 200LA with proposed walkway dead loads, and PTA had engaged consultants in 2017 and again in 2021–2022 to undertake walkway design development and network-wide load-rating assessments that considered PTA-registered rail vehicles, including 200LA, rollingstock, EMU and track machines.
Contracts for rail bridge inspection, coating assessment and remediation cost-estimating required multidisciplinary rail-structural and corrosion/coating expertise; awarding this work to Jacobs Group (Australia) Pty Ltd aligned the PTA with an established engineering consultancy capable of providing load-rating verification, defect recording and costed remediation strategies.
