Grains Research and Development Corporation awarded a contract to Stirlings to Coast Farmers for establishing four paddock-scale barley demonstration sites (Frankland River, Mount Barker, Woogenellup North and Green Range) that included a nil control and four in‑season nitrogen (N) strategies reflecting likely grower supply scenarios.

Stirlings to Coast Farmers ran a fortnightly plant tissue testing program from early tillering to late stem elongation, conducted baseline and follow-up soil N testing, completed two NDVI timings and harvest yield mapping, and extended results to growers via a simple traffic light alert system delivered through monthly e-news updates, interim short videos and at least one field walk.

The project was intended to improve confidence and timeliness of in‑season N decisions—matched to crop stage, rainfall received and fertiliser already applied—so growers could better protect yield and nitrogen use efficiency under constrained inputs.
