About
Public Transport Authority awarded a contract to Arup (Arup Australia Pty Limited) for track engineering services on the Midland Station (Cale Street) (MSCS) Project.
The contract supported design and delivery of a brand-new Midland Station, including relocation of the station to the east and demolition of the existing Midland Station building; delivery of a new 12-stand bus interchange and a multi-storey car park with more than 600 bays at the former station site; extension of Cale Street south to Yelverton Drive to provide a new level crossing; closure of the Helena Street level crossing to create new public spaces and safer connections between the bus interchange and station; construction of a 24/7 publicly accessible pedestrian overpass to connect the north and south sides of the rail corridor and provide platform access during operations; installation of more than 1 km of shared path along the northern side of the rail corridor connecting to the existing cycle network at Morrison Road and Lloyd Street; and provision of 1.7 km of new dual track connecting into the new Bellevue Depot.
The project was framed to support Midland’s status as a Strategic Metropolitan Centre and aligned with Development WA’s urban renewal program.
The contract scope also specified provision of a qualified and experienced Track Project Engineer to perform the Project Engineer (PE) role in accordance with the PTA Engineering Management for Projects (EM4P) process.
The new station was expected to have approximately 3,300 daily boardings at commencement, growing to about 3,700 by 2031.
Large multidisciplinary engineering consultancies with rail track and station design expertise tended to secure project engineering roles on complex urban rail relocations like this, reflecting the integrated technical, planning and multimodal requirements of relocating a station and delivering associated road, pedestrian and parking infrastructure.
