Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment awarded a contract to AJR Construct Pty Ltd for the prefabrication and/or site assembly of hut buildings for the Three Capes Track.
The project supported a world-class, multi-day walking experience with hut accommodation and a boat-based element along a track up to 82 km in length, showcasing Cape Raoul, Cape Pillar and Cape Hauy.
Huts were to be located at up to three sites on the Denmans Cove (opposite Port Arthur), Cape Pillar, and Cape Hauy to Fortescue Bay track sections, with each hut site accommodating up to 48 walkers and staff.
Each site comprised separate sleeping buildings, a building for food preparation, dining and social activities, a rangers hut, and toilets.
The contract allowed businesses to be engaged for all or a combination of buildings and for one or both construction stages.
Stage one involved off-site prefabrication, disassembly and packing for road and helicopter transport and transport by road to a depot near Fortescue Bay; stage two involved site assembly and site works.
A Hobart-based team had designed the buildings and a prototype building had been constructed to refine the design and test construction methods and logistics.
Practical completion of the huts on site was to be by 1 October 2015.
The contract combined off-site prefabrication, helicopter logistics and prototype testing, highlighting technical and logistical complexity that favours contractors with integrated design-to-assembly capability and experience in remote-site construction.
